What to Track Before Launch: A Solo Builder’s Guide to App Analytics That Actually Helps You Iterate

Shipping is exciting. But if you launch without deciding what you’re measuring, you end up “busy” without learning—patching based on vibes instead of signals.

At BlueVioletApps, the goal is simple: ship fast, learn fast, iterate with confidence.

The real question: what decision will this metric help you make?

Good analytics aren’t about collecting everything. They’re about answering:

  • Are people activating?

  • Are they returning?

  • Where do they drop off?

  • What feature correlates with retention?

  • What acquisition channel brings the right users?

Define 3 layers before you launch

1) North Star (one metric)

Pick one metric that represents value delivered (examples: completed workflow, successful session, saved item, etc.).

2) Activation (first success moment)

Define the first moment a user gets value. Then measure the steps to reach it.

3) Retention (do they come back?)

Decide what “retained” means for your app: day-1 return, week-1 return, or repeated use of a core feature.

Don’t skip the “boring” events

Some of the highest-leverage events are:

  • onboarding started / completed

  • permission prompts accepted/denied

  • account created

  • first key action completed

  • error states (so you can fix friction)

  • paywall viewed / purchase started / purchase completed (if applicable)

A solo-builder rule: instrument the funnel you can actually improve this week

If you can’t act on a metric soon, don’t instrument it yet. Focus on the funnel steps you can realistically improve in the next iteration cycle.

If you’re building solo and want a clean measurement plan before release, follow BlueVioletApps—this is the stuff that makes iteration feel obvious instead of chaotic.
